BmA, EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY

Nastenka Alava Calle is an Ecuadorian-Canadian 2D animator and visual artist. She was awarded an entrance scholarship to study 2D + Experimental Animation at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she completed her Bachelor of Media Arts. Inner beauty, physical and mental barriers, and healing through the connection of the natural world often inspire her work. Nastenka worked as a 2D animator for a large-scale multi-channel video projection at Janet Wang Studio in Vancouver. The internship gave an exciting insight and exploration of animated installations in the fine art world.

Her thesis film “Dawn” (2021), a collision of fantasy, nature, and the bittersweet tragedy of death as the body returns back to the Earth, has been officially selected for 4 film festivals including “Best Short Animation” in the 2022 Latino and Native Film Festival. Currently, she is working on a Canada Council of the Arts grant project for a short film and is a part-time superhero illustrator for Astrolucha.
